Schedule II approval with DEA and GCMB
Basic Job Description will need to be updated including all alternate MDs for any PA that wants to prescribe limited schedule 2s.
Then you will need to solicit the DEA to amend your current DEA to reflect schedule 2.
The basic job description has to be approved and uploaded to the PAs online file at GCMB; the DEA will check to make sure the updated basic job description is on file PRIOR to approving amended DEA.
There is no fee associated with submitting a new basic job description.
Once submitted and processed, the PA should get a letter letting them know it has been approved and then the PA can go to the DEA to amend schedule 2s.
For the CME requirements (for both 557 and 1046):
The Board accepts the A.M.A. (American Medical Association) Category 1, the A.O.A. (American Osteopathic Association) Category 1, A.A.A.A. (American Academy of Anesthesiologist's Assistants) Category 1, AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) Category I, and the A.A.P.A. (American Academy of Physician Assistants) Category 1 credit as meeting its requirement for Board approval. It is the responsibility of the physician assistant to verify approval with the source of the program, not with the Board, and the physician assistant shall verify approval before taking the course.
Make sure you are compliant with the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
As always, I encourage you to read the PA Practice Act annually so you have a good understanding of the rules.
DEA is experiencing a technical issue and some PAs are unable to select schedule II on the site. If this is happening to you, you will have to call DEA. DEA has updated headquarters to fix the issue. DEA phone #s are 888-219-7898 OR 866-533-6983. Once you call then you will get assigned to a representative who can add schedule II if you can't select it on the site drop down menu. The representative will email you to obtain CME certificate that is required. She asked to remind everyone please do not apply for schedule II until you have confirmation from GCMB as this will slow the process down. Also, there is no charge to modify at DEA. If the PA doesn't have everything turned in, DEA will reach out to let you know what is missing.
